Keune chooses BINBIN

BINBIN at
Keune in Soest

“We are a cosmetics company, so the look of the waste bin is important too“

The reason why Keune goes sustainable

Keune is going sustainable

Keune Haircosmetics is a Dutch family business that has been developing professional haircare products since 1922. Since 2023, Keune has been working with numerous salons, training hairdressers and developing innovative formulas in its in-house Keune Lab. But Keune’s commitment goes beyond hair care. The company firmly believes that it has a responsibility to care for the planet and the people who live on it, not just today, but for future generations. That’s why waste separation and corporate recycling are key parts of its sustainability strategy.

Why keune chooses BINBIN

The reason for BINBIN

To make this process both efficient and visually appealing, Keune has partnered with BINBIN, a specialist in stylish, modular waste bin solutions for the workplace.
This partnership ensures that Keune can stay true to its identity as a sustainable cosmetics brand where design and functionality go hand in hand, even when it comes to waste management.

Willemijn Marcussen, Facility Manager at Keune Haircosmetics, explains how the decision to work with BINBIN came about:
“When I started working at Keune about nine months ago, there were already a number of BINBINs bins in place. I decided to take a closer look at the market and choose a standard type of bin for the whole organisation. I researched the options available to see if we should continue with BINBIN or go in a different direction. Functionality and design were the main criteria. If you look around, you’ll quickly find that many waste bins are either practical or stylish – but rarely both. And since we’re a cosmetics company, looks are definitely important. The bins need to be user friendly and efficient, but they also need to fit aesthetically into our workspaces. BINBIN delivered on both fronts. That’s why we’ve decided not only to continue our relationship, but to extend it throughout the company.”

How to work with different waste streams

Tailored bin layouts for each location

Dagmar Sanderink, sustainability coordinator at Keune Haircosmetics, adds: “Sustainability is extremely important within our organisation. We’ve set clear targets, including those for recycling and waste separation. We separate business waste, cosmetic waste, paper and cardboard, metals, plastic film, rigid plastics, organic waste and electronics. Larger industrial waste is collected separately. BINBINs are used primarily for general waste, organic waste and paper. In total, we’ve placed twelve bins throughout our facilities. The layout of the bins is adapted to each location. For example, in the staff restaurant we generate more organic waste, while in the offices there’s a higher volume of paper. The bins are adapted accordingly. This level of flexibility was definitely a key reason why we chose BINBIN”.

Clear communication

Installing modular waste bins is one thing – but making sure they’re used correctly is another, explains Willemijn, Facility Manager at Keune Haircosmetics: “Installing the bins is only the first step. The real challenge is getting people to use them correctly. That requires awareness and a bit of education. We’ve made department managers accountable for their teams’ performance, and we make sure everyone understands why it’s important to separate waste.

We also provide clear signage on and around each bin, showing exactly what should and shouldn’t go in it. This really helps to guide people and improve the overall efficiency of our corporate recycling efforts.
